GENERAL ENGLISH QUIZ -Conjunctions

Conjunctions are words that joines other words, phrases, or clauses together.

Example:-
  • She usually eats at restaurants, because she dosen't likes cooking.
  • She is very extermely funny whereas he is extermely boring.
  • I am very hungry, but the kitchen is empty.
  • She speaks three languages besides Spanish.
  • Jack is completely unlike his father.

A coordinating conjunction is a conjunction used between two words, phrases, or clauses of equal rank.

Examples:-
  • Alex stood first and got a prize.
  • Robin and Russel went the beach.
  • Sleep now or you will miss the bus tomorrow.
  • Rohit did not try hard so he did not succeed.
  • He is sad but not broken.

There are seven coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. It can be remembered by FANBOYS.

F-for, A-and, N-nor, B-but, O-or, Y-yet, S-so

A subordinating conjunction is a word that links a dependent clause to an independent clause.

Examples:-
  • Could you contact me when you receive the information.
  • I want to go to the school early so that I can do my project.
  • We need to start early if we want to arrive at the hotel in time for lunch.
  • I have no idea how to operate the new computer.
  • Although he was tired, Shyam still managed to help me with my work.

Correlative conjunctions are words that correlate two equally important clauses or phrases in one complete thought.

Examples:-
  • Both Jon and Lauren enjoyed the movie.
  • Sita enjoyed both the movie and the company.
  • Peter is as tall as Jeff.
  • Not only will I see your ₹10, but also raise you ₹20.
