General English grammar-Determiners

Determiners are words which come before noun and show how they are used.


Example

  • All nations want to be independent.
  • I saw an accident of a car.
  • Your family is a very happy people.
  • You have five days left to complete that project.
  • That is the worst food you have ever had in a long while.

Types of deteminers

  • Articles determiners :

    a/an, the.
  • Demonstratives determiners :

    this, that, these, those.
  • Possessive determiners :

    my, our, your, his, her, their, its.
  • Quantifiers determiners:

    a few, a little, much, many, a lot of, most, some, any, enough.
  • Numbers determiners :

    one, ten, some, any, many, a few, all, several, each, every, either, neither etc.
  • Distributive determiners:

    half, both, all, either, neither, each, every, only.

'A', 'an' and 'the' are called articles in the English language.

Demonstratives determiners are used to specify the distance of something in space or time in relation to the speaker.

  • That must have been a nice surprise for you.
  • These apples are mine.
  • You can use that cup for making tea.
  • This time I won't be late.

Possessive determiners to show who owns something.

Example
  • Where is their house?
  • Look that house is Ram's.
  • This is my book.
  • Our house is just across the street.
  • Where is your pen?

Quantifiers are determiners which modify a noun to indicate its quantity.

Example
  • I have some money.
  • There are many things to do today
  • She had so much work to do so she stayed at the office until midnight.
  • They ate a few biscuits with their milk.
  • I went to some meetings in Delhi last week.

Numbers are one kind of determiner.
Numbers are similar to quantifier determiners, but most grammarians treat them separately.
